Build a portfolio of demonstrated thinking. In emerging fields, credentials matter less than evidence of capability. Write about AI governance. Analyze cases. Engage with the frameworks publicly. This positions you as a practitioner, not just an aspirant.
Play the long game. The people who will lead this field in 2030 aren't the ones who panicked into a role in 2024. They're the ones who built genuine expertise, developed a reputation, and grew with the profession as it matured.
I want to be honest about the uncertainties here.
We don't know how the regulatory landscape will evolve. Will EU-style regulation spread globally? Will the US develop federal standards? Will industry self-regulation prove sufficient in some sectors?
We don't know which organizational models will dominate. Will AI governance be centralized in dedicated teams? Distributed across functions? Embedded in existing risk and compliance structures?
We don't know which credentials will emerge as signals of competence. Will existing certifications (CISA, CRISC, etc.) adapt to cover AI? Will new AI-specific credentials gain traction? Will practical experience matter more than credentials?
These uncertainties aren't reasons to wait. They're reasons to stay adaptable; to build foundational expertise that transfers across organizational models and regulatory regimes.
I started by saying the panic framing bothers me. Let me be more precise about why.
Panic creates a transactional relationship with the field. Get in before the window closes. Extract value before conditions change. Optimize for short-term positioning.
Professionalization invites a different relationship. Join a field as it's being built. Contribute to the standards and practices that will define it. Grow with the profession over decades.
The demand for AI governance professionals is real. The four forces I've described — regulatory crystallization, failure documentation, deployment velocity, and talent pipeline gaps — are genuine drivers of that demand.
But the opportunity isn't a closing window. It's a field being built.
And fields being built need people willing to invest in building them.
